Did you install Thunderbird with the Software Center or apt-get? Or did you use some other method?
What happens if you open a terminal and just enter "thunderbird"? What error message do you get?
You should certainly not need to, and it is not very secure to run thunderbird as root, using sudo.

Don't you have a mail icon in the panel?
And when you launch thunderbird fron the terminal doesn't an icon show up in the launcher bar?
If it does, right click your mouse on the new icon and select lock to launcher.
Or with keyboard use alt + F1 and the down arrow to go down the launcher, then right arrow to
open the quicklist and, again, select lock to launcher.

Don't mind me, I'm only passing through.
Once in a blue moon, I'm actually helpful.
To expand a little on deadflowr's comment, if it's in the panel, when you click on it (assuming you are using unity) does it glow off and on and then nothing happens?
