Is waze GPS an open source project?

And will they be making a GPS app for Ubuntu phones and tablets?

I've been reading lately that waze wants be acquired by proprietary companies.

Couldn't canonical bid and take over waze and keep it (if it is open source?) open?

As I know some proprietary companies would like to close the project as it is competing against their own existing products.
