I'm used to the desktop environments that were used in 9.0+ and 10.0+ series of Ubuntu. I cannot stand the 13.10 desktop environment. How do I get the old environments back? Why I can't stand it: 1) Cannot right click on desktop 2) Annoying bar on the left side of screen 3) Cannot change features from right-clicking on desktop etc. etc. I want the old desktop environment back
You could try installing Xubuntu. The xfce desktop can be configured to look very similar to the old Gnome 2 desktop. Another option is MATE. It seems to be quite popular with people who prefer the older style.
if you really want the old interface back, there is something called "gnome classic". This is a very good blogpost on how to install it: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2013/04/...-ubuntu-13-04/ I have not used Xubuntu myself, but it looks pretty cool, maybe you can try that..
Am not a fan of xubuntu - to basic for me. I was in the same boat as OP until I tried the Cinnamon DE.
Actually 13.10 is still in development. I prefer 12.04 using the classic (no effects) DE: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370

Gnome classic is a good option, though I'm not sure what's the difference between that and gnome-fallback.

Personally I'm always in applicaton windows (5 tabs up on Firefox right now) so I don't see the desktop. What do you use it for?
