Computer will not boot after installing 12.10 upgrade

I recently upgraded ubuntu from version 12.04 to 12.10.

Everything went well until the last part where I was asked
to restart my system for the upgrade to take place.

When the PC restarted it would just hang and will not boot.

Sadly did not do a backup or clone the hard drive, so am looking
to reinstall from scratch again unless someone else has had this
    problem and could assist me.

    Thanks in advance.

Can you boot into recovery mode? Or do you not get past/to the GRUB boot loader? If you can boot into that, perhaps we could help you diagnose what is causing it to hang.

    Thanks,

Hi there and thanks for your reply. It looks as if I do not get past this stage. After you see press F2 and F8
stage of the boot sequence I just get a blank screen and the computer hangs.

I will however still try recovery mode by pressing the shift/esc key as it loads to see if I get the GRUB boot loader.
    Will let you know tomorrow.

    Cheers...............eddierog.

Tried pressing shift key when computer boots but it makes no difference, still get a blank screen.

I did however discover something interesting. I put the ubuntu disc in and booted from that,
I then tried to check disk structure and I got a message saying low on disk space only 38 meg
of disc space available. I have a feeling this could have caused the boot problem. I have an
80 gig drive but reserved enough space to install ubuntu, so cannot understand has this has been
caused. I have decided to do a clean reinstall and hope for the best.
