    Ubuntu 12.04 very slow to boot

    Hi all,

    I'm a new ubuntu user. I just installed the 12.04 version on an external hard drive (of 500 Go). The only problem is that it takes about 2 min to boot which I believe isn't normal.
    I hope it's not something wrong with the installation procedure.

    Here's my computer specifications:

    Version 12.04 (precise) 64 bits
    Noyau Linux 3.5.0-30-generic
    GNOME 3.4.2
    Memory: 3,7 Gio
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 370 @ 2.40GHz × 4

    I believe it will always be much slower to boot on an external drive that an internal one; the basic I/O transfer speeds are so much slower on USB2 than when using an internal sata drive. Whether that 2 mins is normal or not, I can not tell you, as I have never used an external hard drive for an OS, just for data storage, where the I/O speeds are not quite so much of a problem.

    you will see slow speeds booting from USB by the nature of how USB functions, but I don't know if 2 minutes is normal. try using a liveUSB and see if it is comparable. additionally, check /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log for any large pauses to see if anything is hanging at boot
