    Now, the question is how can I switch between the virtual desktops exclusively with the keyboard. Super+S does something bizarre, and Super+Control+Left, Right won't take me switch me around as it would in Unity.
    Ctrl-RAlt+{<- or ->}... ?

    Zika is correct. ALT+CTRL+arrow key.

    I was going to suggest too, that you try Xfce for the fun of it. It's as comfortable to use as the old Gnome desktop,plus, it's still supported!

    Nope, alt+control+arrow key doesn't work. I think this is a bug.

    So, just to clarify, Gnome Fallback is no longer supported?

    Come to think of it, gnome fallback [not gnome fallback (no effects)] is quite buggy. I have no problems with desktop switching in Gnome Fallback.

    They dropped Fallback support with the release of Gnome 3.8. Details here

    I'll consider trying out xubuntu, but what's the closest desktop environment to Gnome Fallback? The more minimal, the better.

    I would say Xfce, which is the desktop that comes with Xubuntu. To me, it's about as close to Gnome Fallback as you can get. For screenshots and more information, you can check out the Xubuntu website. You can download and install just the Xfce desktop from Xfce.org. You'll get the choice of an Xfce or Xubuntu session at login.

    I asked this question in the 13.10 forum and gnome fallback (or classic, whatever you want to call it) is still there. I been hearing the story of classic being dropped since classic came out
