Does a LiveCD seesion temporarily save items?

Hello,I am a High School student working on a project. The project involves the use of presenting something,so I had the option of using Window's Powerpoint or Ubuntu's LibreOfficeImpress.I chose the latter as it had all the features of Powerpoint I needed plus some extras.Over the course of a few hourse I have begun to make really good progree on it,and was about close to finish it when I decided to restart the computer to temporarily do something on Windows(that I couldn't do on Ubunt)However, when I put in the Ubuntu disc in and retarted the computer,i've come to find that my presentataion is missing!!I've searched for it and many folders, but eventually gave up.I would hate to restart all over and do my project from scratch,so can somebpdy please tell me is there any way to get my project file back?

There's no way to get it back I'm afraid. A Live DVD stores everything in RAM, so when you reboot the machine everything is lost.

For future reference if you use a USB drive instead of a DVD you can set up what's known as a persistance file which saves any changes you make and files you create.

Actually you can save to the hard drive from a live session but it won't do it automatically. When in the live session browse to somewhere on the hard drive you wish to save your work and save it. You have to "mount" the drive first, with some distos that means doing it formally ( often right clicking on the icon of the drive and choosing "mount" ), with others just selecting the drive will automatically mount it and with a minority the feature is disabled.

Some distros are specifically intended to be used in live sessions, notably Puppy linux, which is designed to be very small but functional and Knoppex which is a full featured os packed with as much as they can get on.
Distros like that usually have a feature which allows one to save ones settings, such as your graphic mode and how you've set up the desktop appearance, as a very small file on the hd. They are very useful things to have arround, along with testing out linux and using programs you haven't actually installed they are useful as rescue disks which let one carry on working when the hd install or even hd itself has gone wrong.
They can also save a lot of frustration when trying to work out if you have a hardware or software problem, no matter what the hd install says if the live disk runs ok then it's a software problem.
Knoppex is especially useful for this as it contains many popular hardware drivers, it also has the full libre office suit (: I'd recommend having a specialist live cd/dvd iso in the rack ( or on the stick ) highly. Actually it was using an early knoppix to get at and save my work, keep working and meet deadlines when I'd messed up my system with Vista that got me into linux. After the nth time it had happend I realised I prefered it anyway so when I had time to fix the machine, yet again, I just installed linux instead.
Sorry you've lost what was only in ram but now you know the above perhaps it's the last time that will happen.

If you have a thumb drive 2GB or larger you can install Persistent Ubuntu that will save things.
Or with a drive 8GB or larger you can do an actual install.
