I often get unwanted "Zone Identifier" files when I download Internet files from XP running as a VM to my host Ubuntu OS (any Ubuntu host version has done this). These are a nuisance as they prevent file transfer to external USB drives if they happen to end up (hidden away) in a directory containing wanted files. I end up having to delete them so transfers don't end up stalling. So what is a Zone Identifier file? Why do they appear and what purpose do they serve, especially since they need to be deleted anyway? How can I prevent Zone Identifier files popping up in XP VM transfers to host?
