Yeah... I just found that out today. I (naively) assumed shipping to a repair centre would be free because of the warranty.

I was looking at the rates today for shipping, but it seems I can't get any lower than $35CAD with FedEx. So that sucks. One of the main reason of buying Acer was the fact that they had a Windows refund. I guess it's only worth it if you are prepared to send a brand new laptop uninsured or happen to live near an Acer repair centre(, which is in Mississauga, ON by the way).

If we had any politicians with brains the pre-licensing of Windows would be made illegal, except on MS badged machines.
It should be that when you first boot you get the choice of paying to license Windows, maybe with a weeks free trial.
If you gave consumers the choice of paying for Windows or using a Gnu/Linux system for free most would choose the latter.

Same here. A couple of my machines came with trial versions of MS Office, which I used until it started nagging me to pay.
