Yep...what do you think the windows taskbar is (bottom panel) it provides the same function...if you don't like it...don't use the main version of ubuntu...most of us do like it and many newcomers like it too...ubuntu doesn't have to cater to your whims...get over it! Anyway, as egogratis said...this is all off topic...so cry about unity in another thread

This thread is wandering off topic. If you want to complain about the way way the default Ubuntu desktop environment works, we have a place for that. Check out the Ubuntu, Linux and OS Chat

Of course it's on topic! The thread is about changes to Ubuntu, and them being pointless or not.
They should fix stuff that's not working properly before changing stuff that ain't broken.

The thread is specifically about them changing from firefox to chromium as the default browser...that is what is being discussed here...

Re: Chromium Likely to Replace Firefox

Tried installing Google Chrome stable amd64 onto 13.10 3.9.0.1 ran into dependencies at my level of expertise couldn't resolve.

Google Chrome amd64 did install onto 12.04.2 with one dependency which I could install. Came up and ran.

Is there any advantage of chromium over google chrome?

    Thanks.....

I think it doesn't matter, whether its FF or Chromium. We can always install what we like better.
With FF you can easily download youtube videos, also if one wants Gnome3, one can install gnome shell extensions through it, which Chromium/Chrome doesn't allow. I would try to install Chrome, instead of Chromium. Well, anyway its our choice.
    Good day!

What is the dependecy that is unavailable?
I'm writing this from GC (Version 28.0.1500.11 dev)...

    Maybe this: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/i...tail?id=226002?
Fixed in Chrome dev and Chrome beta. Not fixed in Chrome stable. The Chrome stable (v27) expected "next week" shouldn't have the dependency problem described in the bug.

To those who say it doesn't matter at all which browser is default ...
Canonical has limited resources. It's possible that the "non-default" browser may be moved out of main into universe with whatever consequences that implies
In this specific case, the team handling Firefox also looks after Thunderbird. So that's interesting! (I don't know why Chris Coulson was grinning so much during the hangout.)
