    Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Desktop, and 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) End of Life reached on May 9, 2013

    Adam Conrad, from the Ubuntu Release Team, announces the end of life of Ubuntu 8.04, the desktop version of 10.04, and 11.10. He also provides the upgrade paths and instructions for upgrading.

    Virtual Ubuntu Developer Summit 13.05

    Chris Johnston reminds the community to participate in the next virtual Ubuntu Developer Summit starting on May 14th. He highlights the various tracks and track leads and participants. Johnston also lists some of the bug fixes which have landed on the latest summit portal. He invites everyone to keep reporting problems so the portal keeps improving and leading to a better vUDS.

    Our Community Website

    Daniel Holbach writes about the progress on the Community part of the ubuntu.com website. 'The first stage of the work is largely done. Michael Hall set up a wordpress test instance here where we put all the updated content, which is a great achievement already. It's not only up to date, but also much more welcoming and friendly. The Canonical Web team should help us update the style to match the new ubuntu.com site', he mentions.

    Jono Bacon: Sprinting In Oakland

    Jono Bacon provides a reflection on the recent Client Sprint he had with other Canonical employees. He states the aim of the Sprint was to "ensure the many different teams working on Ubuntu Touch at Canonical are in sync and working as efficiently as possible." For those disappointed with the lack of a physical UDS, he says the Sprint was necessary to allow more team coordination and alignment not possible in a UDS setting. However, he is pleased with the progress the team is making to deliver Ubuntu Touch 1.0 by October/November.

    Enhanced Previews, Scope Toggles Added to Unity Testing PPA

    Joey Elijah-Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! announces that Enhanced Previews, or "'content-specific search engine' plugins" can be installed on Ubuntu 13.04 via one of two Unity Testing PPAs. A notable feature includes scope toggles which allows the user to either enable or disable a plugin.

    Jonathan Riddell tries to unravel the mysteries of multiple partitions and UEFI on a Sony Vaio laptop that came with Windows 8 installed. He concludes that, amongst other things, "UEFI is a giant MS conspiracy to make installing Linux more faffy than it already is".

    Based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Elementary OS has been in the works for some time now, and Cassidy James can now announce that Luna is now in its second beta stage. Hopefully, this turns out to be an amazing project, and we will have yet another great Ubuntu-based distro.

    Dell launches new Latitude 3330 laptop

    Dell announced the release of the Latitude 3330 laptop, with full support for Microsoft Windows 8 and Ubuntu Linux, as a viable laptop replacement for existing IT infrastructures in schools. Some of its features are a 13.3-inch anti-glare screen, an HD 720 webcam, VGA, HDMI, USB3.0, and WiFi connection support.

    Ubuntu may have Steam, but now, according to Tom Supples of Extreme Tech, Ubuntu also has proper gaming computers. Could this be foreshadowing something big in the gaming area? Only time will tell.
