Installing Software in 10.10 not available

I installed 10.10 on my father's netbook after a few tries with 12.04. I am happy that a version of Ubuntu finally worked. It works well but when I use the software centre, I cannot readily install programs; instead of "install", the option is to "use code" (or something like this) and even that leads me to an error. In firefox, I tried to add the flash plugin by newb means and even that said the plugin was unavailable. Is this a case of the OS not being supported anymore? I really need to add these programs like flash and was wondering how I could do so. Thanks!

    Hi camelface.

Unfortunately, 10.10 has just reached EOL (end of life).

I'm having a very good experience with 13.04, much, much faster than 12.04. However, if your father's computer have some years on it, may be a lighter desktop like Xubuntu could be an option. Just a thought.

    Regards.

Hello Papibe, could you suggest a specific version of Xubuntu? I tried to install 12.04 yesterday but the installation got stuck at the "Preparing to Install" screen.

I see from here that Xubuntu is quite old. Would I still be capable of updating and installing new software using the software manager?

Video card too, please, and maybe this is one of those netbooks with tiny SSDs instead of a decent drive? In that case it would be good to know.

For Ubuntu and Xubuntu 12.04 LTS and 13.04 are OK, Lubuntu doesn't have LTS releases so stick to 13.04 in that case. LTS releases have 5 (3 in case of Xubuntu) years of support, other releases less (nowadays only 9 months).

I do not know what the Video card is. It's an Aspire One Acer Netbook if that helps. It has a 160 gig HD. I do not think it is SSD.

If LTSs have 5 years of support, could I go with 10.04 as well? Anyway, so Xubuntu is best for netbook computers?

10.04 had three years of support and has reached EOL. I think Xubuntu would be a good choice, don't know about your video.

    Got some forum hits here.
