Re: Your thoughts on Ubuntu.com without Community?

    Yes.

it happened to me the other day, i was looking for this forum, via the ubuntu page, which i happened to be on, so i quit and just looked it up directly. i don't really get it, isn't the principal drive behind linux that it is community driven, just orchestrated by Linus et minions, and likewise with ubuntu, that the community aspect of it is a main characheristic that relieves commercial pressure from what would otherwise be handled by the 'support' guys, at the end of so many ineffectual hotlines. It should be promoted if anything, if only to keep in line with what many other businesses are doing in that regard (steam, ubisoft, giffgaff, any company in their right mind, even M$).

    thanks for listening,
    F.G.

Re: Your thoughts on Ubuntu.com without Community?

Seems to me rather short-sighted on the part of Canonical.

This forum (and others like it) serves as a meeting place for real experts (unpaid mainly, but I don't think paid ones are forbidden) to share their knowledge with the rest of us, both novice and simply at the end of their knowledge. This kind of support makes the experience of customising the environment (OS+Other Programs) much much more user-friendly. The more that problems can be seen to be solved without condescension or unnecessary expense, the more Ubuntu will be seen as an OS worth using. The more that people involved in 'the community', the more likely it is that someone out there will have experienced my issue/problem and have a solution - or know that there isn't one. It's why this is my first port of call when I have a question (I don't go to Ubuntu.com first, but I can't remember how I first heard about Ubuntuforums.org).

I'm glad to see nobody in the poll, as of now, has agreed with the decision to remove community.

I marked the bug as affecting me yesterday, and wholeheartly support the points in post #1.

I think it would be very helpful to have a link titled "Support" in the main menu. I believe this would be more meaningful to a greater number of users than one labeled "Community". It would bring the user to a page that points to these forums, along with other resources, and could also include links to other community resources.

I have always stuck up for Canonical in the past but this is hard to defend.

Perhaps Mark Shuttleworth should just move Ubuntu to a BSD base, as the BSD licence is surely more compatible with current thinking at Canonical, as it appears from the outside.

    Ubuntu is Community.

Just read this article by Benjamin Kerensa.

I hope Ubuntu doesn't lose its community vibe.

You should show him support in his thread.
    And vote in the poll

Hmmm.... just had a look at the site. Top image is a dell with Ubuntu, next left a phone with Ubuntu (natural flow of reading). Both products for sale...

    Re: Ubuntu is Community.

I've been a lurker for a long time on the forums here, and have noticed a drop-off in # of posts daily. I remember when ubuntuforums was almost like real-time chat. It was hard to keep up with new posts. Now, it's not so much. I'm not sure this has anything to do with the OP though.

So far, it's unanimous: community shouldn't go away.
