Unhappy 3.2.0-40 Generic kernel wont boot

I'm not a guru, but I know my way around the command line.

The other day I had just finished setting up an mdadm soft raid-0 configuration on two 2 TB wd green storage drives (system is installed on another drive). I thought I had everything working correctly. Then yesterday I go to install the software center updates. The new kernel, 3.2.0-40 is installed. Now when I reboot, it freezes on a purple screen. When I did a reboot from that, it complains that my raid-0 is degraded. I chose the option to boot with degraded raid.

Now every time I restart, if I let it use kernel 3.2.0-40 I get stuck at an empty purple screen. If I instead use grub to load the previous kernel, 3.2.0-39 It boots normally, although it seems my raid is permanently in a degraded state (with only 1 of 2 drives) until I do something about it.

Please help. Primary concern right now is getting a clean boot.

    thanks!

Here is more info. Here are the updates that were installed yesterday.

These were installed manually, earlier in the day:
    install liblzo2-2 <none> 2.06-1
    install libpkcs11-helper1 <none> 1.09-1
    install openvpn <none> 2.2.1-8ubuntu1.1

These were upgraded when I did the software center upgrade:
    upgrade mysql-common 5.5.29-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
    upgrade libmysqlclient18:i386 5.5.29-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 5.5.31-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
    upgrade openjdk-7-jre 7u15-2.3.7-0ubuntu1~12.04.1 7u21-2.3.9-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
    upgrade icedtea-7-jre-jamvm 7u15-2.3.7-0ubuntu1~12.04.1 7u21-2.3.9-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
    upgrade openjdk-7-jre-headless 7u15-2.3.7-0ubuntu1~12.04.1 7u21-2.3.9-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
    upgrade openjdk-7-jre-lib 7u15-2.3.7-0ubuntu1~12.04.1 7u21-2.3.9-0ubuntu0.12.04.1
    upgrade linux-firmware 1.79.1 1.79.4
    upgrade unity-scope-video-remote 0.3.5-0ubuntu2.1 0.3.5-0ubuntu2.2

The mdadm raid array was fully functional at this point, but I had not rebooted. I then installed these manually for netatalk.

    install libcrack2 <none> 2.8.18-3build1
    install cracklib-runtime <none> 2.8.18-3build1
    install db5.1-util <none> 5.1.25-11build1
    install netatalk <none> 2.2.1-1

after rebooting I noticed the problems I mentioned in the first post.

    Thanks again for any support.

Probably you are affected by this bug:

Looks like it. Someone else there also mentioned having problems with the 3.2.0-40 kernel. So, how do I disable this kernel from loading in grub until the bug is resolved?

Looks like there is a new 3.2.0-41 kernel available in the software center. how do I know if this fixes the bug? These being 2 TB drives, it takes several hours for the array to rebuild and I'd like to avoid that.
