It sounds like your first attempt at installing Ubuntu, you actually installed it to the external hard drive. Of course, as it wasn't selected in your BIOS as a boot device, that's why your computer kept booting Windows 7 from the internal drive. It also explains why after the second installation, your external hard disk shows the same folder structure as your actual installation of Ubuntu, and the reason why your videos aren't on there and the drive can't be read in any Windows or OS X computers. It also explains why there's a Linux Swap partition on the external hard disk.

I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
