Brief Black Screen when trying to boot from Ubuntu 13.04 dvd

I've been looking around without seeing anyone else with my problem so any direction you can give me would be much appritiated.

After creating a live disk from the windows 7 image burner, I verified it and restarted the machine (Dell Inspiron N5110)

The Bios comes, and goes. Then a black screen with a flashing white line comes for a second or two, and then boots Windows instead.

I've checked the boot priorities with to be sure DVD is before the hardrive. And I did get a live USB stick to work a few days ago but the file became corrupted or something before I could figure out how to mount the the partition so I could install. Since then, the most I've gotten from the USB stick was sticking to stick to that black screen with the flashing white line. So I decided to opt for a DVD instead.

But it feels like I'm hitting the same problem with both USB and DVD, so any suggestions would be helpful.

I've posted replys about this one before (I think also in the Mint forums)
It can be a graphics card issue
but generally if one takes the time to update the BIOS
    this will resolve that situation
Or try a nomodeset on your grub startup line

It's not what you know but who you know!
