Can apt-get dist-upgrade upgrade to a new version

Is it possible to bypass the tedious upgrades with

    Code:
    do-release-upgrade
or it's GUI version and use

    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
to upgrade the Ubuntu family versions for example from Ubuntu 12.04 to Ubuntu 13.04?

In that case I think we are many people who want to learn how to do it

That's not a supported method of upgrading the OS, as far as I know.

i'm always surprised by people asking, again & again, about the same questions, without searching a little bit first

I know both of you are very experienced, and I rely on your advice. So the old truth is still valid concerning upgrades between versions.

    Thank you
