Why don't you call the "established" manufacturers on their "customer support" numbers and ask them that you want to buy an "Intel" based Laptop/Notebook without pre-installed OS? When I say 'Intel Based' I am talking about Graphics. AMD makes equally good processors and are relatively cheap.

Edit: By the way, IMO ASUS have very good battery back up... My EEEPC gives me close to 11hrs power on Battery.

Already did / doing that.... calling customer support / local vendors : The standard answer, NO OS laptops are just as costly or some cases costlier than win OS laptops !! yes I too am surprised ... ..again as I said I am NOT fully informed here ...so IF I get more info, I shall post

that was one of the places I checked out first

my understanding from that link or tux mobile : most vendors are North America, Europe based or have heavy shipping charges to other countries ; in many cases the prices are NOT comparable (i.e.) these vendors are substantially costly than windows pre installed versions

    Edit
    -----------------------------
: what do I mean by cost diff ?

Example of vendors in tux mobile list :
    http://www.pugetsystems.com/nav/trav...php?sys_id=102
this laptop costs $1079 without shipping

A laptop with very similar config costs $500 or at about that when I buy a windows laptop from dell or similar
    example http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15r-5521/pd
final price : http://flic.kr/p/efWKNN uploaded as a screen shot

    -------- end edit ------------

my quest continues ...albeit in a less professional, ill informed way

Have you considered upgrading your laptop by adding more memory, getting a new HDD, upgrading the processor... if the option to upgrading is cheaper than buying a new one then do consider it.
Also Ubuntu/Linux need a lot less system resources to run than Windows. For instance, you cannot run 64bit Windows on 2GB RAM but Ubuntu_64bit runs quite well on 2gigs RAM. Try Ubuntu on your 'old' laptop and learn... by then you will know what exactly you want in your machine.
