    Re: 3.7.0-7 kernel update broke ATI driver

    That is weird. I just checked /etc/apt/sources.list and I don't see anything weird in there. I haven't touched any of the defaults (I did enable multiverse by selecting the option to install proprietary codecs during installation from CD). I cannot figure out where it installed from:

    Code:
    $ apt-cache policy linux-headers-3.7.0-7
    linux-headers-3.7.0-7:
      Installed: 3.7.0-7.15

    I certainly haven't installed any PPAs for the purpose of newer kernels. After looking over my software sources I only have these PPAs:

    software-sources.png

    I can explain the packages I installed from all of them, though most are self explanatory (google music manager, nuvola player to connect to google music, google chrome, skype wrapper). The others I installed were Oracle JDK 6 from webupd8/java, and then the leolik and nilarimogard PPAs are for notify OSD customizations.

    Very bizarre. How exactly are you checking that the latest kernel available is only 3.5.0? Maybe I can run the same command and get different info back to identify the culprit?
    If all else fails, use fire.

    I was just looking at what is shown in Synaptic. See thumbnail at the bottom of the page. (I hate Software Center & never use it).

    Here are my sources, all the uncommented lines from /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medubuntu.list:

    For some reason it shows up in synaptic for me. I compared sources.list and don't see anything out of the ordinary. Here are the uncommented lines:

    Code:
    $ grep "^[^#]" /etc/apt/sources.list
    deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main restricted
    deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main restricted

    deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu quantal-security multiverse
    deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu quantal main
    deb-src http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu quantal main

    And here is the meld output after I sorted both of our lists. Mine is on the left and looks mostly the same, though for some reason my multiverse lines seem to always stand alone while yours don't. Not sure why that is but it doesn't look different. You have medibuntu enabled while I do not:

    sources.jpg

    When I run the same apt-cache command you did it shows up as part of the "Reverse Provides" section though I'm not entirely clearly what that is. It shows up nowhere else in the output:

    Code:
    $ apt-cache showpkg --installed linux-image | grep -B 1 "3\.7\.0"
    Reverse Provides:
    linux-image-3.7.0-7-generic 3.7.0-7.15

    I really don't know how the kernel got there but it did...

    Re: 3.7.0-7 kernel update broke ATI driver

    I think I'm beginning to understand this better. We're not running the right command. linux-image is just a metapackage & it's not what we're looking for.

    If I run apt-cache showpkg --installed linux-image-3\.5\.0-27-generic it gives me a lot of information including, it seems, the source:
    Code:

    This line in particular:
    3.5.0-27.46 (/var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_quantal-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages) (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_quantal-security_main_binary-amd64_Packages) (/var/lib/dpkg/status)
    contains filenames where the searched package name was found. Looking in those files, the first one /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_quantal-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages contains the listing of the package itself. The others just seem to contain references to it as a dependency of other packages. So the name of the first file seems to provide the name of the repository from which I obtained that package.

    So what do you get if you run:
    apt-cache showpkg --installed linux-image-3\.7\.0-7-generic

    Don't filter it through grep. I think it's specific enough so the output won't be excessive.

    PS: Searching around online, I found this:

    ubuntuupdates.org.png

    although I don't recall seeing xorg-edgers among your ppas.

    Re: 3.7.0-7 kernel update broke ATI driver

    Facepalm.

    It must have been xorg-edgers. I did try their drivers after reinstalling the other day but they didn't work correctly so I uninstalled and went back to a manual installation. I removed the PPA a little bit later but I guess that must have been AFTER I had already installed the 3.7.0 kernel that must have come from their PPA. I should have checked that before sending you on this wild goose chase. My bad.

    Thanks for the help! I guess I can upgrade my desktop at home to 13.04 (will check the nvidia release notes just to be sure) but I think 13.04 uses the 3.8 kernel so I probably shouldn't upgrade to that until AMD releases a driver that has support for it. Lesson learned!

    Seriously, thanks for all of your efforts tracking this down.

    Re: 3.7.0-7 kernel update broke ATI driver

    Glad to help. I learned a little more about using apt-cache in the process.

    In the meantime, you can just uninstall the 3.7.0 kernel. You probably still have the 3.5.0, and if not it's easy enough to install that from the official repos.

    Yeah I haven't sat down to uninstall the 3.7 kernel yet but I definitely still have the 3.5 kernel -- I'm actually using it right now. After troubleshooting for a bit yesterday I decided I had to get back to work so I held shift in grub to go the advanced menu and boot up the old kernel. I'll play around with uninstalling this weekend and configure it so that 3.7 is gone and that 3.5 is the default. That way I can let it automatically boot up rather than having to select advanced in grub and then scroll down to the kernel that I want.
