Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot all the time

I have a duel boot system, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10. Windows 7 I have no problem booting in Grub. Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot all the time and I have to hit the reset button on my tower once or twice to get Ubuntu 12.10 to boot. When it is booted I do not have any problem getting on the Internet or updates.

Ubuntu 12.10 is on a 500 Gb drive and Windows 7 is on another 500Gb drive. Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you correct this problem?

    Thank You

Re: Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot all the time

    Is system shutting down normally?

Have you looked in log files to see if anything is reported as not loading, trying repeatedly and then working (sometimes?) or just errors.
I use log file viewer and look at dmesg first, but there are many log files.

    logs are in:
    /var/log

Please use Thread Tools above first post to change to [Solved] when/if answered completely.

Re: Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot all the time

Your 15sec boot looks pretty good. My hard drives are 30 to 40 sec and my inexensive SSD is 10 sec.

The only thing a little slow is this. And I am not sure if first or second entry (entry is start or finish as posted), but I think it is your swap taking 8 sec to mount? Perhaps because it is large? Or is it taking 8 sec to mount your / before the swap entry?

This is my entry. I have / on sdd3 which is the SSD, and swap on hard drive.

Is there anyway to speed up this slow entry? Are there other options? I'm using a i7 processor and 16 Gbs of DDR3 memory.

Re: Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot all the time

I noticed that it had to run file recovery. Is it having some sort of issue that need fsck on every other reboot?

Perhaps run the full fsck from a live installer DVD or Flash drive? Reboot fsck is just a quick check.

#From liveCD so everything is unmounted, swap off if necessary, change example shown with partition sdb1 to your partition(s)
#e2fsck is used to check the ext2/ext3/ext4 family of file systems. -p trys fixes where response not required
    sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sdb1
#if errors: -y auto answers yes for fixes needing response see man e2fsck
    sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1

I understand running fsck in terminal with the live DVD after that I am confused.

It is just to see it that clears up the message of it running recovery on boot.

I ran fsck from the DVD and nothing changed. Is there anything that I can copy from the disk to fix problem?

So is it still running recovery on every reboot?

    Did e2fsck report any errors?
