AMD/Nvidia Drivers give me low performance

The AMD/Nvidia drivers for Ubuntu, SUCK. Ive downloaded the proprietary AMD drivers for an AMD 7950 for Ubuntu and I was getting so much more lag and much less FPS than on Windows when playing Minecraft (I didnt use OpenJDK On linux, I used Java 7). The same goes on a GeForce GT 220. On both systems I also got a huge decrease in FPS on a game called Blockland (this ran through Wine which may have given the problem). On the GeForce GT 220 Counter Strike Source ran rock-solid though, no lag however I dont remember my FPS.

So in conclusion, is it just the games that I am playing that give me low FPS or are the drivers not as good compared to windows?

The drivers for graphic cards are indeed different for Windows and Ubuntu. If you are still playing the same exact games with the same settings, it probably is the driver. Otherwise it might be because of the game. What you could do is to take a look at System Settings > Additional Hardware for possible upgrades.
