    Update Without Authentication

The last couple of Updates I've responded to have not required Authentication.

This is a new 64 bit 12.04 install.

    Is this a new "feature"?

    Thanks!

    Re: Update Without Authentication

Would you not agree that not all updates need authentication? You will find that some updates still require authentication as do some software installs through the software centre. But as a general rule an attempt had been made to reduce the number of times we are asked to authenticate. It is felt that users may get into the habit of putting in the password without examining what or why it is required. That 'without thinking response' is weak security. By reducing the number of times we are asked to put in our password it is hoped that the user will be better protected against malware because they may give more thought about why they are being asked to give their password.

    Regards.
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

    Re: Update Without Authentication

Do I understand correctly that I have simply noticed and reported an intentional change to how Ubuntu's Update process works?

That is, Authentication is no longer required for Updates?

Thank you very much for explaining this to me. Now I understand why the behavior is different than what I am used to encountering for two years. And that what I detected is *not* evidence of any potential problem with Updates or Authentication.

If I understand you correctly, I will mark this thread as "Solved".

    Please advise.

    Thank you,

    Garry

    Yes indeed.

This behaviour was changed for the release of 11.10.
