Characters in Thunderbird menus and subjects

Hi, I either never noticed or this recently just happened. In Ubuntu 12.10 Thunderbird 17.0.5. I am pretty sure it just happened.
In starting Thunderbird I noticed on the menus whenever there should be an A there is funny character that looks a lot like a &. Similarly whenever there is a P what is displayed is an S that is missing part of its bottom, in neither case is what is displayed a & or S but the glyph looks close to it. Looking at settings it says it is US English. I am guessing this is the last Thunderbird release as Mozilla is not, last I heard, doing an email program.

Has anyone run into this or knows what one can do about it?

    TIA.

Well yeah that is true that Mozilla stopped supporting thunderbird. But I never faced any issue like this. Can you please share a screenshot?
