    Question Group writing software

    Dear All,

I'm an English teacher and I came up with an idea this morning... it's difficult to monitor and correct students' writing. Is there some software that allows an administrator (in this case, me) to oversee a group of people writing? I could then switch between each learner's document, highlighting errors and providing suggestions. I would have access to their saved work and would be able to create puzzles from it for later lessons. If this doesn't exist yet, I'm keen on starting the project myself when my time frees up in three weeks.

Does anyone know of anything like this? Also, though I have never found coding in any way intimidating, this would essentially be my first proper programming project! Some links to go to set me off in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for any advice, inspiration, or bumps!

Thank you, derpz! Incidentally, I did Google it first! The trouble is that I haven't found anything specifically designed for a classroom environment yet. The easiest one for all students to access at the same time is Google Drive. However, I'm hoping to find something more purpose-built later on so that it's easier to administrate large groups. If not, I'll just make my own!

I would have thought this was easiest to do with Google docs. Even if you don't like their interface you could always make your own and use one of the Google doc's API in the background.

That way the vast majority of the difficult coding around sharing, backing up, solving conflicts etc will be done for you already.

Thank you, Kaspar! I've been a bit caught up with other work recently so have just been dabbling with Google Drive. This is exactly what I need to optimise everything for my class! Thank you!

Essentially, Google Drive allows for more than one person to work on the same file. You can start a new file and then provide permission to others to edit the same file. Once you've jumped that hurdle, it's simply a matter of looking at different files that (for example) two students also have access to. As they write, you could suggest changes in capital letters.

With regards to making things beautiful, that involves visiting https://developers.google.com/google...ocuments-list/ and then figuring the rest out for yourself, depending upon your personal preferences!

    Yeah Adam is spot on.

I didn't mean to imply google docs is the total solution. However if you want to write you own program the Google Docs API can form the backbone (in the way he laid out) and save a lot of coding.

I suggest a word count add-on that might help your writing if you use Firefox:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...ord-count-tool
In case you do not use Firefox or you want a fast solution, you can go to its web version:

Will need help from your IS department, but etherpad is also a nice tool that can be deployed locally : http://etherpad.org/
There are free online etherpads around online.

    | Reinstalling Ubuntu ? Please check this bug first ! |
    | Using a ppa ? Please install ppa-purge from universe, you may need it should you want to revert packages back |
