    I would appreciate some help with update manager, please.

    I'm running 12.04.2 on my HP desktop and it shows that I have 15 updates totalling 42.8MB.

    Then it gives me a warning to the effect that it may not be safe to download them.

    What should I do here,. please?

    Lewis,

    There's no warning message about anything being unsafe in your screen shot. It refers to an unknown .iso error.

    Is one package being marked as potentially unsafe? Have you tried unchecking it and then updating again?

    Go to update manager > settings > software sources > other software and make sure the lines for the cdrom entries are unchecked.
    Then close and hit check in the update manager again.

    Rereading the OP, I must ask what correlation is there between the packages in the update manager and the files in the Downloads folder?
