    grub messed up

I did a regular update and now am getting all of these grub errors apparently I now have grub for quantal but am running precise and want to keep precise. I don't get a grub splash screen to edit either just a huge amount of scrolling text with a black background, see the end of the ud log below. I already tried configure -a to no result

    Re: grub messed up

I had a similar issue and I fixed it with:

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

If you haven't noticed already, there seems be a 'bad' install of 3.5.0-27 generic. Try removing it and run apt-get update followed by dist-upgrade.

    Re: grub messed up

that gave me an error, am I risking the whole install by removing, the kernel?

    Code:
    cmcanulty@darcytech:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
    [sudo] password for cmcanulty:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.config: 39: /etc/default/grub: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution
    cmcanulty@darcytech:~$
    the removing got this error

    Code:
E: linux-image-3.5.0-27-generic: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
then dist upgrade just reinstalls the same grub 3.5.0-27 with the same errors, how do I get a previous grub?

    Code:
    cmcanulty@darcytech:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
    [sudo] password for cmcanulty:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.config: 39: /etc/default/grub: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution
    cmcanulty@darcytech:~$ ^C

    Re: grub messed up

You can check the kernel in use with:

    Code:
    uname -r
You can boot into an older kernel from Grub-Menu -> advanced options; select an older kernel and boot.

N.B. Do not remove the kernel in use.

Also there seems to be a syntax error in /etc/default/grub check that as well or post here and we'll have a look.

    Re: grub messed up

The problem is supposedly in line 39 (or so I think), which is, GRUB_FONT="/boot/grub/unicode.pf2". Comment the line out and see if it helps.

Since you are using Kernel: 3.5.0-23-generic you can remove linux-image-3.5.0-27-generic. Remove it with Synaptic, there will be 3 or 4 packages for the kernel version 3.5.0-27 remove them all. Then in Synaptic select "Not installed (residual config), it will show residual pkgs. or libs. remove them too. Also 'fix broken packages' from Synaptic.

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

    Re: grub messed up

It just happens. I am not sure why though.

If it happens again? Just remove the faulty package and repeat the code.

The relavant parts of the error:
    Code:
    .....

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed.

    ...

Failed to process /etc/kernel/postinst.d at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-3.5.0-27-generic.postinst line 1010. dpkg: error processing linux-image-3.5.0-27-generic (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2 Errors were encountered while processing: linux-image-3.5.0-27-generic
So you will know what package is causing the problem.
