Cant Connect LAN!

I want to connect my desktop and laptop through LAN.In my desktop i am using windows 8 and in laptop Ubuntu 12.10.
In my laptop its getting a connection named "wired connection 2".Its saying connecting but after sometimes its get disconnected!!
How can I connect?

Are these machines connected directly to each other, or is there another machine - a DHCP server, in particular (might be built into a router)?

Solved!

In the connection setting If I select " Shared to other computers " in IPV4 settings for "wired connection 2" I can connect LAN.
