Ubuntu on Smartphones - Ubuntu and Android both?

Hello,

I have heard that there is a Ubuntu for smartphones.
Is it possible to have two systems on one phone (Android and Ubuntu)?
So that you have to choose a system like in the boot menu of a Computer?

I think it's called Ubuntu Touch. I don't know if you can have both installed, but you can check out Ubuntu.com for some information.

You heard wrong. It is still very much under development. And a lot depends upon Smartphone manufacturers releasing products into the market place. We will not see any products until the autumn of the year.

It is my understanding that Ubuntu/Unity and Android will share the same kernel. They will run side by side. So, when using Unity you can easily switch to the Android side of things to use the device as a phone.

I have seen mini Ubuntu and Debian distros on Android phones. Set up a Debian Squeeze on mine once. Better suited for an Android device with a physical keyboard though.
The way there set up it allows you to run the distro on top of (sort of) the Android devices ROM. The image is kept on the SD card.
You can easily go back and forth.
It gives you some functions that are not on an Android device, but with only a virtual keyboard it was very impractical for me so I deleted.

Actually Singapore loco team just had a meetup with visiting Lead Designer on Ubuntu Touch , the details are on FB , and from what we saw that night on a Nexus phone and tablet , it looks smooth. Real smooth. Very good battery life as well. Didn't get to play games but video looks amazing. We were told the expected release date is next year and beta might be out by later this year , the month mentioned was Oct.

There were also a few things we didn't like and we gave feedback to him. Overall , I can't wait.

Ubuntu runs well on entry-level smartphones.It uses the same drivers as Android But we can't use both simultaneously .
