    Libre office vs MS word

    Hi everybody,

I am not that new on Ubuntu (dual-boot windows) but new on the forum.
I 've got a question about text editor software.

I am writing my school thesis and I use MS Word during my internship and Libre Office at home.
But the thing is when I transfer the file from MS to LO, problem appeared and I got a blank page.
And the same thing with LO file in MS.

Do you have any idea, or software, that I can use to sloved this problem?? Considering that I will need to send this file to my teacher and company so they will probably use MS, save it and send it back.

    Thank you in advance

PS And if you got the same thing for MS excel and Offic Calc.

    File format

What format are you using? You could try a different one. However, back when I used MS Word, I always had trouble when shifting between different versions of MS Word. Small stuff always got mangled or lost. If you have a thumbdrive handy, you could use portable LibreOffice it handles all file formats, except maybe one, better than MS Word.

+1 for the "what formats are used".

Also what versions are you using? Try saving to an older microsoft format.
eg. 2000 instead of 2008/10 etc.

Using Microsoft Office on Windows will guarantee 100% compatibility with your teacher and company. Since your thesis is such an important document, I wouldn't take any chances if I were in your shoes.

    There isn't a thing.

Libre will break the formatting from an MS doc, and vice versa. Don't listen to these guys and their workarounds.

If you really must use MS Office at home, and like using Ubuntu, I suggest you run a VM and stick Office on that.

You might get more useful, help here:

There are 122 pages of questions

Go direct to the source. You may also find the Libreoffice 4 (comes with 13.04) is more successful than older versions. You will have more success import an Office document into LibreOffice than you will exporting it back to Office. MIcrosoft just doesn't see the need for compatibility with rival software.

You could also try going to Libreoffice>Tools>Extension Manager?Get More Extensions Online and seeing what is available there.

    Regards.

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

The older .doc is better for compatibility. If you don't do any fancy things, the older the better.

If your teacher only has to read your thesis, not edit it (why would he want that? It's your work), he probably wouldn't mind if you send it in as a pdf file. Nothing is as portable as that. Pdf is just not editable. Every word processor can export to that format.
