13.04 slow & resource hungry after clean install

I performed a clean install of 13.04 final beta on my S76 Gazelle (circa 2006; C2D, 2GB Ram, Nvidia Go 7300). The system is hogging my resources and performance is awful. At idle it's using about 50% CPU load on both cores. I installed the recommended Nvidia driver (304, I think?) and this didn't help any. Ram usage is about what I expected at around 350-380MB.

This is a fresh install on a formated HDD with ext4. Performance is not sluggish at all with other linux OSes, such as Mint 14 or CentOS. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Re: 13.04 slow & resource hungry after clean install

Would it be possible to turn off Compiz (3D) or do I have to install Gnome Classic (2D) instead to reduce the need for resources?

My Intel HD 4000 is connected to a Thunderbolt Display with a resolution of 2560x1440. I know, not perfect, it's a Mac The mouse is slow-acting and the fan turns high when playing high resolution videos.
Any hints to reduce CPU/GPU heat and slow-acting mouse are welcome!

P.S. A resolution of 1280x720 is not realy an option.
