Hi, I am not a dedicated or experienced Ubuntu user. For some years I have had a split system with xp, win 7 and ubuntu 10.04 lts. I have recently upgraded my motherboard and cpu and now find that I cannot get on the internet with Ubuntu 10.04. Because I have spare drives and because I eventually will be a linux user for 80 % , I have also installed Fedora 18 on a spare disk to look at fedora as another linux option. I can get on the internet with all partitions and live disks except for ubuntu 10.04 ( my present ubuntu 10.04 disk partition and my old ubuntu live 10.04 live cd will not allow internet access). My new motherboard is an Asrock Z77 Fatal1ty Performance with a Lan chip (broadcom BCM57781)
As I have had no problems in the past with my ubuntu 10.04 connecting to the internet with my previous Gigabyte motherboard and my present win 7, win XP, Fedora 18 partition, and live ubuntu cds 11.10 and 10 can all connect to the internet, I assume that there is a incompatibility problem with this broadcom driver/chip and ubuntu 10.04. I have spent 3 days trying to sort this out but cannot find an answer. There is probably a simple solution somewhere but I failed to see or find it.
My question is , is there a convenient/ simple way to save my personal files and preferences to dump into Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS when I install that over my 10.04 LTS partition? Taking into account that this partition (10.04 LTS) cannot connect to the internet.
