    Do I need Swap?

    Hi,

I am currently reworking my laptop to triple boot with Win 7, Win 8 and Ubuntu. My questions is what is swap used for and do i need it.
    My specs are:
    1.2ghz core 2 duo
    4gb ram
    320gb hdd

I plan to partation my drive into
    90gb win7
    60gb win 8
    30gb ubuntu
    120gb Data
    possibly swap

Does anyone who has experiance with windows 8 think 60gb will be enough for it?

    Thanks in advance

If you plan on using suspend or hibernate you'll need swap space at least the size of your RAM

this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq explains everything about swap. Pay special attention to the paragraph, how much swap do I need? (swap size equal to ram size)

10 GB would be more than enough, you'd probably be ok with half of that. On the Windows 8 question I can't comment since I've never used it.

That's a good resource. Point six (swapiness) is also something to pay attention to.

    Yes.

Make it around about the same size as your ram, or even half that.

I need swap. I always use swap.

Yes, I used it for around half an hour, it confused, frustrated and irritated me. I put a 12.04.2 disk in, hit install and am now calm and happy.
