Not Enough Disk Space - Install Problem

    Greetings~

I am new to Ubuntu. A family member's laptop fell and I believe the hdd was wiped since windows no longer started up.
After BIOS start up it would read no bootable drive.

I burned the new Ubuntu to a dvd from my own laptop and inserted it to the new laptop.
I started by Trying Ubuntu and now would like to download but it says there is not enough disk space.

From the dash I accessed the Disk Utility, the Drive reads: 695 MB File, not partitioned.

I tried to Format Drive > Master Boot Record > Format

The operation failed, Operation not permitted.

Additional Information: Details says 3.7 GiB, dish 2.0 GB

What options do I have to complete the install of ubuntu at this point?

Sounds like the hard drive is dead. was this a Vista machine by chance?

Try to look at it with Gparted or Disk Utiliy from the live cd

There is a utility on the live dvd called "gparted". Use that to see whats on your HDD and if you would, take a screenshot and post it here.

It is an acer and I think I am looking at it in the Disk Utility. Might there still be a corrupted version of windows still on the disk?

If nothing shows in GParted, does that mean the hard drive is broken? Or might it be corrupt and if so, is there any other way to restore function by wiping it?

If Gparted can't see it then it's broken, can you swap it out?
