Cannot access Internet in Ubuntu 9.10

I installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop last year using windows xp.....and as soon as I had ubuntu installed I deleted windows from the computer!!.....n the ubuntu I have dos not even play any music or video.....it can conect 2 the internet for some reson so I can't update....n I want to use my computer 2 the fullest .....do any of u guys have any apps or any installetion packeg that can help me?

Guys I currently have ubuntu 9.10...but I want to upgrade....and it dosnot even let me go to internet...so I can't download anything on the ubuntu os.....I had windows xp but I deleted it when I got ubuntu. So what I want to ask u guys is can u guys please give me steps to follow to download and install the new ubuntu on my laptop..(I don't have windows on my laptop, I only have ubuntu 9.10) so please help.

You need to download the Ubuntu iso file from here...

I would recommend downloading and burning a CD or creating a LIVE USB from another computer of the newer version of Ubuntu that you want to run. Make sure to backup all your files off the old Ubuntu install and perform a clean install.

I think the clean install would be a better option than having to manually upgrade to each release until you hit the desired release.

Once you have the system installed and running smoothly I would recommend looking at the RestrictedFormats page so you can setup mp3, flash, and java playback on the system.
