Recording Sound above a Threshold

Hi All.

I'm not too sure of the correct terminology to describe what it is I am trying to do, but, here's a qualitative description: I am looking for some software that will open my line in/microphone, and 'listen' to the sounds. If the sound exceeds a certain threshold, then to record the sound to file.

A good example (though not what I have in mind) is for a laptop to be running on a table, and as someone enters the room and speaks, it is recorded - But the recording does not continue on endlessly, it stops some moments after the loud sounds stop and is ready for the next loud sounds?

I hope that makes sense? Any solution is viable, no real constraints. Just for an idea I've had!

Coming back to answer my own question, Audacity does this:

From the Transport menu > Sound Activated Recording (On/Off) and Sound Activation Level... are the options.

Just so this thread had an answer, and can be marked resolved.
