A question about the hardware support

I am not sure yet but if i would like to build my own pc and install ubuntu on it as the primary os, what hardware should i choose to maximize the
performance? Or is it compatible with enough hardware that i only have to pick the hardware i require for my use of the pc?
Or is there any list of compatible hardware?
And if i chooce not to build a pc were can i find a store that sell's pre installed Ubuntu? i have tried to find any but i havent found any.

There's a couple Phoronix articles that speak to hardware:

What Linux users need to know when shopping for PC Hardware: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...shopping&num=1

Most popular linux hardware of 2012: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTI2NDU
