Re: Old hardware brought back to life

Basically there is this thing called Intel Graphics Drivers for Linux*, here's the link:https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...?DwnldID=13815

However, although videos were able to be played in fullscreen, i don't think it's possible to play them beyong 480p, at least on my old acer.

update, 07/09. i just streamed and watch a movie in hd with no sound lag

The original post (or posts, four of them) have been edited many times now.

I think it's time for asking for a review, please. Anything missing / should be deleted / unclear / ... ?

Re: Old hardware brought back to life

Thank you mörgæs for a very good update of the first few posts in this thread

I have only a few minor suggestions. (You can remove this post afterwards)

    1. wirefree --> wireless

    2. at least in previous versions (e.g. 12.04), pavucontrol needed a separate installation of pulseaudio (it was not added automatically), so

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install pulseaudio pavucontrol
You may want to check if it is necessary in 14.04, but it should work even if not necessary.

Maybe you should also add that 'it can take hours to find and test all the options in order to get the microphone, earplugs and loudspeakers to work properly. But it is definitely worthwhile taking that time, because it usually works in the end'.

Re: Old hardware brought back to life

    A couple of questions:

    1. In regards to PAE. According to the PAE help page - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE - my understanding is the CPU in my Dell Inspiron 8600 should be a Dothan based CPU and therefore not require the forcepae flag.

However - when running Ubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu 14.04.1 from USB (Live not installing) - I receive the PAE message so have to use the forcepae flag.

    Is this ok?

    2. Based on my system specifications above - would it make more sense for me to be running Xubuntu or Lubuntu (rather than Ubuntu)?

However - when running Ubuntu/Lubuntu/Xubuntu 14.04.1 from USB (Live not installing) - I receive the PAE message so have to use the forcepae flag.

    Is this ok?
If you receive the PAE message you have to use the forcepae flag, and I'm rather sure that it works to run that CPU with forcepae.

Yes, depending on your preferences (for example eye candy versus speed).

    Lubuntu - ultra light foot-print
    Xubuntu - medium light foot-print

Try both live and install the flavour you like the best. In my opinion, standard Ubuntu needs more horsepower (and more than 1 GB RAM) to work well.

    -o-

It is possible to install any tools to Lubuntu, that come with Xubuntu and Ubuntu, for example pulseaudio and pavucontrol, which make it easier to get the audio system working.

Re: Old hardware brought back to life

Thank you for the reply and reassurance regarding forcepae flag.

I've tried about Lubuntu and Xubuntu live (from USB) and like the look and feel of Xubuntu. Didn't feel too slow either so will install that and see how I go.

don't know if this is right place for this...mods can move to appropriate place, please...

would like to thank the Ubuntu MATE team for bringing my Wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop
    back to life...

she had Ubuntu 12.04 LTS which worked fine....until the upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS....

she only has 500 MB of memory to work with....not enough for 14.04....untill MATE came along...

14.04 MATE is working great on this old unit & will for some time to come.....thanks team !!!
