    Cannot browse any network shares from Thunar or Nautilus

    Running Xubuntu 13.04 development release. I'm starting a new thread on this as some of the old info regarding this problem appears to be outdated. I'm in Thunar, which is finally able to browse network shares without any extra tweaking (installing other packages, etc.). I have been able to browse network shares just fine until this morning. Earlier this morning I could see the computers but every time I clicked on one, I got the error "Failed to retrieve share list from server: connection timed out." Rebooting hasn't helped. In fact now that I've rebooted, I click "Browse Network" then click on Workgroup and get the same error. I CAN browse shares on this same computer from another computer without any problems. I can also go to a command line and enter "thunar smb://192.168.1.9" and it will browse the shared folders on that computer just fine.

    Maybe this is a regression? Should I file a bug report? It has been working just fine for the past several days until now.

    FWIW, I did sudo apt-get install samba --reinstall and nothing has changed. The other computer accessing this one is also running 13.04 and is has no problem browsing network shares from Thunar. There must be something wrong with configuration?? Here's my smb.conf:

    Post the output of the following command please:

    If there is no output start nmbd:

    sudo service nmbd start
    And try the smbtree command again.

    Question: Are all the machines on your network running Linux. IF they are there is a way to have these hosts show up with a little help from Apple.

    I rebooted again and when I click on Browse Network, it shows only "Windows Network" and then after about 10 seconds pops up an error 'Failed to open "/ on ". Timeout was reached.' If I click on Windows Network, it shows me MSHOME and WORKGROUP. Clicking on WORKGROUP and I get an error 'Failed to open "WORKGROUP". Failed to retrieve share list from server: Connection timed out.' Clicking on MSHOME gets me an error 'Failed to open "MSHOME". Failed to retrieve share list from server: Connection refused. On this LAN there are this machine, a Xubuntu laptop, and another PC running Win XP. This machine also has VirtualBox where I often run an XP instance but it's currently not running (though it was earlier before rebooting).

    On the Xubuntu laptop, it lists all the machines with shares when I click Browse Network. It doesn't ask me to choose between MSHOME and WORKGROUP. It does show that "Windows Network" like the main PC does but it lists the other machines right above it. On the computer having trouble, it only shows "Windows Network" and then has me choose between MSHOME and WORKGROUP.

    After pulling my hair out all day and googling the hell out of this, I think I have finally fixed it - at least for now. My /etc/hosts file had an invalid entry. I corrected the IP address for the laptop-linux machine and now it works fine. I'm having a hard time believing that was the problem though. Shouldn't the computer be asking the router what the IP addresses are for other machines and then updating these on its own from time to time? I believe they call that Address Resolution?

    Can you write down the detail how you fix this problem? What kind of entry?
    I have the same problem. I install Xubuntu on 3 different PCs, only 1 that works normally for browsing network.

    If you are using Xubuntu on all your machines you no longer have to browse to the machines you can access them directly by name ( with a .local at the end ):

    EDIT: If you are using the latest Xubuntu you can now just drag and drop the icon next to smb:// to Places on the left side of thunar to create a bookmark.
