Thread: Dell 1545, long boot time. Bootchart attached.

    Dell 1545, long boot time. Bootchart attached.

    I have a four year old Dell 1545 laptop running Ubuntu 12:10 Unity. It is a Pentium Dual Core T4200 2GHz with 3Gb RAM.

    In the last few months the boot up time has been getting worse and worse and the last boot time was 3m 39secs! It takes 1m 49s to P/W request and then the remainder to being available for input.

    If someone wouldn't mind viewing the Bootchart and providing some advice on how to reduce this somewhat I would be very grateful. Thank you

    That image appears to be illegibly small. If your using a separate home partition i'd suggest a fresh install (Not a great solution I realise).

    My knowledge of the boot system isn't great but if you can get a legible copy of that up I can take a look.
    picturepush.com/upa lets you up an image without login if this is reducing the size.

    I have never understood boot chart, but suggest looking at log files to see if you can find the error.

    I use Log File Viewer (not sure if default on not) and first look at dmesg for anything with outright errors, long times between tasks or repeated tries and either failure or it works but took too long.

    What is the SMART status of the drive? If it is failing, then it may take a long time to boot.

    I can't read the chart, but it looks like your boot is IO bound during the entire boot time. How full is the disk?

    Apologies for delay in coming back and many thanks to those who have replied.

    My HDD shows some 82Gb unused (I'm not a big user of music or videos)

    I've installed the SMART software and run it - sorry, this may sound pathetic but how do I copy the readout showing in my Terminal?

    I will have a look at LogFile Viewer and get back with data shortly.

    Please use code tags. Using advanced edit menu you can easily add them with the # in edit panel.

    All I know with Smart Status is green in Disk Utility is good.
    In your test file it shows passed, so that should be ok.

    But it seems to be having issues mounting drives (partitions?).
    What is sdb?

    I might run fsck if ext formatted on all ext partitions.

    #From liveCD so everything is unmounted,swap off if necessary, change example shown with partition sdb1 to your partition(s)
    #e2fsck is used to check the ext2/ext3/ext4 family of file systems. -p trys fixes where response not required
    sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sdb1
    #if errors: -y auto answers yes for fixes needing response see man e2fsck
    sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1

    I run a website using NetObjectsFusion running on Windows via Virtualbox (20Gb) (I'm soon to divest myself of this) .

    Could this be what you mention?

    I so not know anything about vitualbox.

    But is you are mounting partitions from the network that can slow things down a lot, especially if you have network issues.

    It's possible your 20GB virtual machine--I assume it is a single 20GB file is taking a long time to check to make sure it is intact. Normally when you run virtual machines, they are on a server that you run 24/7 so you don't boot very often. Who cares if it takes a server 1 minute to boot or 3 mintutes to boot if you only take it down twice a year.

    It looks like Unity-greeter takes a long time to load, but I don't run Unity so I can't comment if that is normal or not.
