That was with neither, about to try with acpi=copy_dsdt and see if that works. Then i shall try with acpi=off if it did not. Will post back up with how this turns out.

You probably do not have nVidia, but nomodeset sometimes works for other video issues. But it sounds like you may need other boot options.

Try the post from oldfed, I had tried to install on a old Toshiba and had similar troubles.
The above solved my problem

I was past the need for nomodeset, but then i managed to mess something up when I was in as root. Already tried going back to using that but it did nothing for me now.

This is while trying to boot recovery mode?

Have you tried either of the older recovery mode options (3.5.0-26-generic or 3.5.0-17-generic )?

Yes, recovery mode. Will try the older two next.

If you can boot with either of the older kernel images (possibly with acpi=off) post back with details before making any changes.

the 3.5.0-26-generic gave me the same. acpi=off did not make a difference.

And the same for the 17. I am beginning to think I may need to go back to the disk and start over. Whatever I damaged by accident must have been important.

I am back to the point where the only way I can get to a desktop is by using the "try Ubuntu" on the disk. But at least that works. I was partialy afraid that not even the disk would get me back to graphical.
