Hello!
I'm new to the forum; for the past few months, I've been using a hand-me-down Toshiba Satellite laptop from roughly 2006 with Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. After spending all of last night trying to get a wireless USB adapter working, I finally managed to get it working today after finding the following thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1667140
I was apparently missing firmware and upon installation of it, my wireless USB adapter started working like a charm. However, since that update, my computer experiences hard freezes after being online (on either Firefox or Google Chrome) for approximately 45 minutes after starting up the computer. The mouse does not move; the keyboard does not work; the screen just goes to black as if it were about to load a DOS prompt and the mouse stays on the screen, but again, it won't move at all and so I just hold down the power button to switch it off.
I Googled old threads in cursory fashion but didn't seem to find anything that related to my problem; after spending ten hours yesterday trying to find a solution to the WiFi adapter problem that turned out to be head-smackingly simple, I really don't want to be up half the night figuring it out, so I thought I'd go ahead and ask. I just hope that it's not an issue that my computer could be too old to handle.
