Display resolution too low

Hi all,

I have a problem with my new 12.04LTS installation of ubuntu.
Somehow I managed to make the option 1680x1050px appear in the nvidia system settings, but still the screen resolution gets reset to 1024x786px after a reboot. I have tried various things, like the save to x config file and such but always my screen resolution gets reset to 1024px. How can I change this?
I have looked at the xorg.conf file but didn't know what to edit and also don't want to screw up my system
