    Re: usb modeswitch

Are you absolutely sure you need to use usb-modeswitch by hand? It usually Just Works automatically once you've set up your device in Network Manager. Sometimes, the device will show up as a CD but still work fine as a modem.

Can I confirm that you've at least tried setting up the device in Network Manager and that it doesn't work at all this way? If if it doesn't work, have you tried installing a driver for it?
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
