    learning curve, new tab slow

i got thru, stumbled, thru and can operate in ubuntu and really like it.
one catch is when i open a new tab it takes a while, opens a window of previous sites, and finally i can type or paste into the bar at the top.
    how to speed up?

Open a new tab in what? Maybe Firefox? What version of Ubuntu? Tell us about your computer: CPU, RAM, video.

    ubuntu 12.04.
    2x athlon 5800 4 gig ram.
2 port video card? hi end
everything else seems normal,it just takes forever to get to enter a new tab on firefox.

edit, tried again. it slowly opens a window with previous sites, then i can type or paste in the top line for a new site.
    if thats normal,im ok.

edit boot drive 120 gb solid state, and 1tb sata extra

Are you saying that it loads the history when you open a new tab? Have you tried Edit/Preferences/Startup, show a blank page? I don't think I could make Firefox show the history in a new tab, but it might be a setting somewhere. Oh, here's something for you:

Did you install an "additional driver" for your video card? Do you use a lot of tabs in Firefox? Do you have any Firefox extensions installed?

Running Ubuntu as dual-boot from its own partition?

Your CPU is a little slow, but not extremely slow. (It was introduced five years ago.)

answer to all questions is no. i just installed 12.04 and got started.

is it normal to take 5-10 seconds to be ready?

When you open a new tab, does it show the history? I didn't understand what you meant when you said, "opens a window of previous sites."

My computer is only a bit faster than yours, and a new tab opens in less than a second.
