In the past, I would have said, "jazz" -- how could that not be a choice in the poll???

The odd thing is that I used to have music playing almost all of the time, but over the past few years I haven't been turning on much music at all -- even though I still consider myself to be a "music-lover" (isn't everyone?). I enjoy the silence, and I think that's what actually lets me concentrate better.

Ambient. If it has any structure whatsoever, I'll start analyzing it instead of concentrating on my work. And any kind of vocals are too distracting for me.

Meditation-type music, preferably without vocals. Nature sounds in background are nice (birds, waves, waterfalls, fountains, gentle breezes). Piano, not so much.

There should've been an "other" option... I like Japanese (J-pop, Vocaloid, Touhou remixes), electronic, and sometimes metal.

Re: What sort of Music lets you concentrate better?

Classical if I'm really getting my brain on.

Trance (something with a beat with or without vocals) is good because it's quite repetitive. Although it can have the affect of making you get out of your chair and dance around which is counter productive.

Rock and roll works sometimes, but it has to be a really good album or a few tracks I'm jelling with.

If I'm super stuck instead of getting mad at the thing I'm doing I pick up the guitar and play that for 30 minutes and that calms me down and helps get my mind in the right place for work.

I have a box of old cd's NASA symphony of the planets. Basically they took electromagnetic readings from Voyager 1 and 2 as they traversed the solar system, they took these electromagnetic emanations and converted them into sound, which turned out incredibly entrancing and relaxing.

I'd vote Liquid Drum 'n Bass. It's strange considering how many beats per minute (165-185) this kind of music often has.
Classical will always be number one for me though.
