    Cannot access banking site after updating

    I finally made the decision to try Ubuntu a couple months ago. I've been very pleased although so much is Greek to me as far as Terminals etc but I am slowly picking up bits.

    I was using Ubuntu 11.04 LTS happily with no complaints. A couple weeks ago I did an update. After the update there was one important site I could no longer access: my banks online page which I use nearly exclusivly to perform my banking. I googled and tried things I didn't understand to no avail. I just don't know enough yet even begin to troubleshoot this problem. Of all the sites I regularly go to, losing access to my bank was by far the worst possible. My system is set up to dual boot and I can grudginly boot up Windows and access the banks site from there.

    About a week ago I tried upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10 hoping it would fix the problem. I was wrong.

    Can anybody patiently help this reciently converted but dedicated Ubuntu newbie thru this frustrating problem?

    As always, Thanks in advance.

    Re: HELP: Cannot access banking site after updating

    What web browser are you using? There are several that come with Ubuntu. If you cannot access the site in Firefox, try Chromium. Or ask your bank online support what browser it is supposed to work in.

    DoctorReno; Hi !

    Firefox as your web browser ?? I have same same situation. I was not happy with any of the proposed solutions (is a FF/HTTPS translation thing) My workaround:
    In the address bar enter the full address (https//www4.<bank_name> that takes me to a search engine search screen that does the translations for me when I select my bank. And am able to then log in.

    hope this helps

    @DoctorReno

    It would help others to troubleshoot your problem if you let us know what browser you are using and what error message (if any) appears on your bank's site when you try to access it. Typically, problems like this are caused by sites that will only allow access to certain OS's and/or browsers. Nine times out of ten this problem can be solved by telling the site you are using a different OS/Browser combination - Firefox's User Agent Switcher add-on is a convenient tool to do this.

    That being said, this may not be your problem (unless the bank coincidentally changed their validation requirements at the same time as you updated).

    Re: HELP: Cannot access banking site after updating

    I apologize I didn't know there were different versions of Firefox that can come with Ubuntu. I am using and have used what I thought to be the default. I have Firefox 19.0.2 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0. I have used Firefox with Windows for a couple years and never had a problem accessing my bank. So when I saw that Ubuntu browser was default Firefox I was happy. The Firefox worked just fine with Ubuntu 11.04 LTS from day one and accessed the banks website flawlessly until the fateful update I mentioned. After that update and to this time the, sorry don't know correct terminology, but the little 'dial' that spins one way and is black indicating uploading (vs. d/l which is orang and spins the opposit dir) it just spins black and spins and spins and spins. I have left it for as long as 1/2 hr and it continues to spin. I don't get any error message and it doesn't time out. Does this answer your questions adequately?

    Bashing-om I thought I had tried something similar with no success, but I trtied what you said and it did get me to the banks site. This seems like a ridiculous amount of workaround but for now I'll take it till we can find a cleaner way that works as smooth and seemless as I had become acoustomed to. Sure beats having to reboot into windows everytime I want to access my bank which is an even more ridiculous waste of time. Thanks

    Maybe it could be made into a bookmark to save you typing it in the address bar?

    Don't waste your time curing a failed upgrade of 11.04. Better to go for a fresh install of 12.10.

    There might be other (unnoticed) problems than https access.

    all;
    Welp.... I am like this:
    There are a number of people complaining on Mozilla's help page about this issue;
    I bet a majority of Mozilla's developers also run some form of linux/FireFox and experience the same difficulties.

    I am content to use the work-a-round and expect that the next version/update of FireFox will correct this issue.

    merely my thought

    Re: Cannot access banking site after updating

    Sorry, had to answer door. I'm back. Yes I was going to do a cut and paste so I didn't have to type so much. This will be a major issue a week from tomorrow as I had a bicycle crash and did some MAJOR damage to my left arm. The surgeon is an Upper Extremity Orthopedic specialist. He is going to have to harvest tendons from both forearms, both thighs and both calves in order to graft them and attempt reconstruction. Prognosis is not that optomistic. I will be in special braces for well over a year and I will have to be a one handed typist. I'm terrible with two hands.

    I had no idea of what to expect or what version of linux to use. Everyone seems to their fav. I picked Ubuntu because it seemed easier to pronounce than kubuntu or some other variants. Had no idea what to expect was just a shot in the dark. The one thing I knew for certain is I've disliked Win since day one and it just gets worse IMO. I knew that there would be a steep and long learning curve for me. I was delighted with the Ubuntu I picked out of the hat. Yes I had no idea what terminals were. Didn't understand the programang lingo. Quickly realized that I wasn't going to learn and master the language but the things I use I put into a write document and cut and paste. I would love to become much more educated and comfortable. I like how similar the basic feel of most daily online things were. And SOOOOO much faster catagorically than Win. I was totally pleased and the first problem I encounted was months into use not minuites.

    I have to express that I have no idea how to do a clean install of 12.04. How I chose the Ubuntu I picked is because it said it would install Ubuntu AND set it up so that you could dual boot and have Win. In very short time I was having a pleasant time exploring Ubuntu. Probably by far not the best way to install but it was a great way to get me get me going and now it's time to move on and learn, assuming that you will all continue to bear with me and my lack of experience in a totally new OS.

    I am grateful to all of you today. I feel welcomed to this forum, I'm actually a relatively long time member and contributor to TechIMO and it was there today that I was referred here. I find the calibre of the members here, their respect and supportive manner to be what I consider a true genuine forum to be about. I feel comfortable here and I hope to become a familiar and welcomed addition and possibly someday I can contribute something.member.

    I apologize that I will have to leave shortly today but I would like help in learning how to do a clean install. Thanks Oh... and I totally agree that this problem will be addressed and corrected in near future versions or updates.
