Exclamation Updated ATI drivers now ubuntu won't boot

I need help please, steam asked to update my video driver and after I rebooted ubuntu won't boot. I just get a black screen with a terminal in the top left of the screen. I've tried purging and reinstalling the fglrx drivers but then amdconfig --initial gives a command not found error. I also tried recovery mode and failsafex but it doesn't work either. Please help, thanks!

    Hello!

A few questions to get started...

What version of Ubuntu are you using?
What is the model of the card?
How did you install the driver initially?
Did Steam give you any status or error reports?
What version of the driver was Steam asking you to upgrade to?

We'll see if we can get you going again.

Hi, it's ubuntu 12.04 and a radeon hd 5870. I had the driver install through ubuntu's driver manager, and then steam said it recommended updating my video driver and added fglrx-experimental-12 to the driver manager (as a new entry), and it said it installed fine.

I've also tried both removing and using various backed up xorg.confs

I found if I type exit I can get to the login screen, but when logging in it says "failed to load session ubuntu"
