Former data partition containing Windows now considered boot. I want to recover data!

    Hello,

I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 Secure as a dual boot with a Windows 8/UEFI machine.

Unfortunately, several uneducated attempts at using boot-repair did not fix the first problem I ran into, wherein \nst\autoneogrub0.mbr wasmissing. Furthermore, after running boot-repair in advanced settings (hoping to directly target the missing MBR file, and assuming I fixed the problem, I uninstalled Ubuntu and attempted to reinstall it again.

The first error of a missing MBR file was still not resolved. Secondly, now I couldn't mount my Windows drive, which before must have been considered a basic data drive by Ubuntu as I could access it fine from (a) the LiveCD and (b) the first time I installed the OS. Also, I can't boot from the UEFI boot-loader into Windows, which is concerning due to a lack of a proper backup of my files. (aaaaaarrrrrgggghhh I should've heeeded the omeeeennnns) I do own a recovery disk that I have not yet tried.

Upon investigation with GParted, Ubuntu has flagged the partition as an EFI boot drive.

    My question is threefold:

    1) How do I fix the initial error of the missing MBR file, and resolve any UEFI booting issues?

    2) How do I regain proper access to the data on my Windows drive? (it has been flagged as a boot drive but still contains gigabytes of information I presume to be my own.)

    3) How do I get Windows to boot properly again?

All throughout I had to boot in Legacy BIOS, as I could not get to Ubuntu from the UEFI boot menu.

Below is the boot-repair info script. (Also here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/5640470/)

Do you want to continue? =================== Final advice in case of recommended repair Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sda2/efi/.../grub*.efi file! The boot files of [The OS now in use - Linux-Secure-Remix 12.10 28feb2013] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair]. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootPartition) =================== Default settings Recommended-Repair This setting would purge (in order to fix packages unsign-grub) and reinstall the grub-efi of sda5, using the following options: sda2/boot/efi, Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s fix-windows-boot backup-and-rename-efi-files =================== Settings chosen by the user Boot-Info This setting will not act on the MBR. No change has been performed on your computer.

Re: Former data partition containing Windows now considered boot. I want to recover d

If you have Windows 8 pre-installed with UEFI, you have gpt partitioning and the MBR is not used. There is only a MBR in gpt partitioned drives so old partitions tools will see one large gpt partition and know not to corrupt it.

Early versions of EasyBCD did not work with UEFI, supposedly they fixed it. But I see no reason for it with UEFI.

To dual boot you have to have both systems installed in UEFI mode. And how you boot installer is how it installs. But a few systems only let you install in BIOS/CSM mode. But Boot-Repair can convert an Ubuntu install to UEFI if installed in BIOS mode.

Post the link to the BootInfo report that this creates. Is part of Boot-Repair:

Boot Repair -Also handles LVM, GPT, separate /boot and UEFI dual boot.:

You can repair many boot issues with this or 'Create BootInfo' report (Other Options) & post the link it creates, so we can see your exact configuration and diagnose advanced problems.
Install in Ubuntu liveCD or USB or Full RepairCD with Boot-Repair (for newer computers)

You will need to use the 64 bit version of 12.10 or 12.04.2 and from the UEFI menu boot the flash drive in UEFI mode. That way it will install in UEFI mode. Usually best to have secure boot of but UEFI on to install.
Systems need quick boot or fast boot turned off in UEFI settings. Vital for some systems.
Best to backup efi partition and Windows partition first.
Use Windows Disk Tools to shrink Windows main partition, but not to create any new partitions, if installing on same drive.

As of 12.04.2, it is possible to install on UEFI systems with Secure Boot enabled (using signed versions of Shim, GRUB, and the Linux kernel). This is only currently set up for Ubuntu (desktop, alternate, and server) and Edubuntu images due to pressures of time; we expect to enable it across the entire Ubuntu family for 12.04.3. Details:
