    Hardware Support Questions

    Hey guys,

I have a few questions about hardware support and Ubuntu CE 12.04.

Here's the laser printer I use in my office. It's setup as a network printer. Would any of the drivers work OK on Ubuntu CE or do I need to call my printer manufacturer to confirm?

Also, I'm looking for a keyboard with an aluminum frame on it (similar to an iMac keyboard) that works OK with Ubuntu CE. Does anyone know of a good keyboard with an aluminum frame I can use? It can be USB or Bluetooth. I saw some from Logitech I was wondering if they'd work.

Additionally, I'm looking for a "desktop trackpad" (similar to Apple's Magic Trackpad or the new Windows 8-style trackpads) to use with Ubuntu CE. Preferably aluminum build, but if it's plastic, it'd be OK. It can be USB or Bluetooth. Are there some good ones that'd work with Ubuntu? I've also heard Logitech carries those. I don't need all the fancy gestures, but I'm so used to not using a mouse, it'd be hard to go back.

Lastly, are there any good HD webcams that work with Ubuntu CE? Would any Logitech one work or do I need to look at other brands? I'd also like something metal, but plastic would be OK.

Thanks a bunch for all your help!

    Re: Hardware Support Questions

Either Mac USB or wireless keyboard work with Ubuntu. I don't know about the Mac trackpad. Most Logitech USB products work with Linux.

There are lots of Okidata printers in the CUPS database, but I could not find a specific driver for the Okidata MC361MFP. You will have to do some research. Send an email to Okidata and ask them which CUPS driver to use with that printer.

iSight cameras work, most Logitech webcams work.

The Okidata website link shows drivers for Kernel 2.6, which is on older versions of Ubuntu. For Kernel 3.2 or 3.5, you would need to ask Okidata directly.

Sounds good about the keyboards. I'll look around and find a good one I want to use.

I'll test some trackpads and see what happens. I'll keep you posted on what I find!

I'll look around for a good webcam as well Thanks for the info.

Thanks for clarifying about the OKI printer. I'll call OKI and see what CUPS driver will work. What's the link for the CUPS database?

    Thanks again for your help!

    Re: Hardware Support Questions

Quick side question. Do you think any of these keyboards and/or trackpads would work with Ubuntu?

    Re: Hardware Support Questions

For the questions regarding the boards i would honestly just search for them in conjunction with ubuntu/linux and see what others are saying on them. I am a fan of logitech and have not come across a keyboard (usb) that didn't work with UCE.

To find the drivers, create a printer, select OKI, and scroll through the model numbers. http://localhost:631

This driver list only includes families of printers: http://www.cups.org/ppd.php

Sounds great. I can also order some, give them a spin, and ensure there's a good return policy where I get them from if there's an issue. I think most'll work. Ubuntu has come a long way.

Got it. I'll give OKI a call this week and see what CUPS driver I need. Thanks for the tidbits.
