Can't install driver for Realtek 8723 (even after following other threads)

Hello all,

I just bought a LG N460, which comes with a (07:00.0 Network controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8723.

I tried both the solution here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/13963...not-recognized
and tried downloading compat-drivers.

In both cases, what I can make and install the drivers without a problem, but when I try to use modprobe, I get this:

Which version of the driver did you compile? This one? rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.0514.2012 There is a slightly improved version. Here is a link from my own Dropbox. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/58267392/rt...09.2012.tar.gz

thank you for replying (my timezone is different I guess, that is why it took me long to reply).

The version I compiled is rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0007.0809 .2012, which apparently is the newer version you are talking about (I think I even got it from your post in an older thread).

So I assume the answer is not there. In an older thread (in an openSUSE forum, actually), someone says you need to use rmmod rtl8192se when met with this issue (the thread is here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...er-hell-2.html). But this doesn't work in my case either (there is no such module)!

If you’ve got error trying to modprobe rtl8723e, just like this :

then it means there is some compat wireless module especially with rtlwifi.ko module that conflicting with this rtl_92ce_92se_92de_8723ae_linux_mac80211_0006.0514 .2012 driver. You must make sure there were no compat wireless on the system by removing / uninstalling them before doing make. If you were using atheros ethernet ar8161 with compat-wireless or there is the linux-backports-modules-cw-xxx module on system, you must uninstall them first.

Do you have the package linux-backports-modules-cw-3.xx installed? For your ethernet, by any chance? If so, now the really hard work begins!!!

My belief, based on a few years of experience in such matters and a bit of guesswork, is that the backports package handles the x80211 pieces differently than the native built-in drivers as well as rtl8723e. Therefor, you end up with a sad situation where wireless works and ethernet doesn't or vice versa, but never both. There is another post about that here and a couple, if I remember correctly, at askubuntu.com. Maybe that's alright with you. Maybe you can use wireless everywhere. If that's the case, I'd uninstall backports, compile rtl8723e and hope for an early fix. Before you do so, however, I'd download a copy of backports to your desktop in case you get in a jam and need to reinstall it. It may reside in your apt cache; check:

ls /var/cache/apt/archives/ | grep backports

If the .deb file is there, that's all the lifeline you need to reinstall. Here is a reference from my machine:

If you truly need both ethernet and wireless,I'd uninstall backports (after saving a backup, of course), compile rtl8723e and then compile compat-wireless using the driver-select to specify only the ethernet driver alx is to be installed, not the wireless parts. I'd compile compat-wireless-3.6.8-1-snpc. Then, I strongly believe both will work.

I wish I could point you to a link where this succeeded but I can't. You may be the first to even try it!

actually it was easier than expected! I uninstalled the backports, as you suggested, and the internet didn't stop working. So I restarted the PC, and not only didn't the ethernet stop, but the wireless worked.

I don't understand why (maybe between linux-3.5.0.18 and 3.5.0.26 the driver was added to the kernel?), but I'm not complaining, heheh.

Anyway, thank you again! Although it ended up being an easy fix, I would never have thought of it without your help.

I believe alx was added in -24 and later. Of course, whether it worked as perfectly as it should is another question, which you have now answered!
